Posh Felt wasn’t born from a singular idea, but from a lifetime of creative pursuits. From the vintage-inspired silhouettes and finish details that reflect designer Maureen Buzzeo’s enduring love of fashion, to the meticulous craftsmanship and brilliant colors that are hallmarks of her work, every detail of Posh Felt’s handcrafted handbags are a testament to Maureen’s lifelong maker mindset. Maureen knew early on that she had inherited a mind for creative creation from her artist mother. For many years she dabbled in design before deciding to take that interest a step further in her early twenties by attending the revered Maison Sapho School of Dressmaking & Design in New York City while working a day job in investment banking.
Ten years ago, Maureen began designing handbags, working first in fabric before discovering German wool felt. Maureen fell in love with the wool’s durability and vibrant color selection and soon began making her handbags exclusively out of the all-natural material. With that one simple switch Posh Felt was born.
Working out of her Jamestown, Rhode Island, home studio, the self-taught designer spends hours perfecting each design before bringing it to market, testing shapes, sizes and finish details before deciding on just the right combination. Maureen meticulously cuts each pattern, transforming simple felt squares into works of wearable art that come in an array of playful hues and several styles ranging in size from totes to wristlets. Special details, like the vintage metal frame that holds the cosmetic bag open while in use and metal grommets on the crossbody’s strap, are what make each piece a standout, which is exactly the point, according to Maureen.
She designs each Posh Felt bag as a special occasion piece that she hopes not only puts a smile on the wearer’s face, but also brings them a little extra attention of the best possible kind. Blending in is not the Posh Felt way. As the company’s motto goes, those who wear Posh Felt “Dare to be Different.”
